Hitting the open road for our first social drive, was a big thing. We wanted things to go smoothly, no-one to get lost and most importantly for everyone to have a safe and enjoyable time. When we were deciding on a route and destination, we wanted something with minimal intersections, a range of wide open to tight and twisty roads and something not ‘too far’.
For our first time we decided on a Northern Loop, from the north-west border of Sydney and into the Southern point of the Hunter Valley.

The Wollombi Tavern known for welcoming road runners in all shapes and forms was an easy choice and the road itself we would begin on the Old Pacific Hwy, then onto Peats Ridge Rd, turn and follow George Down Dr and finish on the Great North Rd.
When drive day came…
When drive day came our team were first to arrive at the truck stop in Cowan. Some fog still lifting and other car and motorbike enthusiasts rolling by onto the Old Pacific Hwy. First to arrive was a coupe, a BMW G82 M4 Edition 50 Jahre - a very rare car and an indication of what was to come. Next was Oscar, Ozzy and Lachy they lined up at the front making the rows for the rest to follow. Then, well the flood gates open. Car after car, a trend began to show - a lot of BMW M.

The plan was to meet at 8:30am and leave by 9am…
But as 8:45am approached it was plain to see we were outgrowing our meeting location. We called for an early quick driver briefing, just to greet everyone and let them know what to expect and just like that we were off! 97km of twists, turns and scenic views laid ahead of us. Like a long snake we slid down the Old Pacific Hwy at a flowing pace. The plan was to drive up until our only real major turn, a veer left onto George Down Dr, and have a quick pitt stop - take some photos and regather the group. Unfortunately, our pulling over spot was infiltrated by an RBT (joking aside), a lot of thumbs up and waves were exchanged in turn grouping us all up either way - we just unfortunately didn’t get to snap any photos of the drive.
Another 50km laid ahead…
Over a small mountain range and into the Wollombi Valley were the raw nature on hilltop meet tiny farms following the central river. As we arrived in Wollombi the owner of the Wollombi Tavern let us know the paddock was to wet from a recent rainstorm and our best bet was a street take-over and what a take-over it was.
Small batches of cars rolled in and would take up stripes of parking, eventually filling both sides of the road for about 400m. Everyone disembarked from their cars with stories ready to share and headed down into the beer garden that had been set up waiting for us.

The scene was set, the music was on, and food was served.
The scene was set, the music was on, and food was served. So many stories about the last 97km were shared with laughter taking over the beer garden. After about an hour smaller groups broke off and started to leave, each heading their chosen route home - but most making the simple U-Turn and going the way we came. It was easy, easy like a Sunday morning should be. We can’t thank everyone enough for being respectful, enjoying themselves and most of all ATTENDING! It was truly a special day where we personally got to mix all our passions, cars - work - driving and family (not in any particular order!) and we loved it. We cannot wait for the next one, we hope to see you all there again.
