Round 3 of the BMW Drivers Club of NSW’s SuperSprint series saw us head back to Sydney Motorsport Park, this time tackling the Amaroo Circuit layout. Known for its tight, technical corners and minimal margin for error, Amaroo is a true driver’s track - one that rewards precision and patience more than outright horsepower.
We rolled in with our M140i race car freshly serviced and tuned flex E50. The car felt razor-sharp, eager for a day of hard laps, and ready to show what our recent work had achieved. But while the M140i was prepped for peak performance, the weather was anything but ideal. The forecast promised wet and windy conditions throughout the day, and even on the drive in we could see the heavy cloud cover and damp roads ahead.
Arriving at the track just after 7:00am, the paddock was already buzzing despite the gloomy skies. We set up under the awning, keeping an eye on the horizon while going through final checks. Around 8:00am, the mood lifted slightly as small pockets of blue sky began to break through the grey. It was far from dry, but at least it looked like we’d have a fighting chance at a clear run.
By 9:00am, it was our turn to head out. Group 1 rolled onto the circuit, and it was immediately clear that conditions would demand full focus. The tarmac was cold from an overnight soak, with water pooling in certain corners and a slick sheen through the braking zones. Ozzy took the wheel for the first session, carefully feeling out the grip levels. The first lap was all about keeping the car tidy, avoiding the wet patches, and gently building tyre temperature. By lap 2 and 3, the dry line began to appear, the standing water started to shift, and confidence grew. Session 1 wrapped up with a 1:05 - a quick time in the circumstances and a strong way to start the day.
Between sessions, we had a chance to walk the paddock, watch other competitors, and cheer on a few of our own customers who were running in different groups. It’s always a highlight seeing such a variety of BMWs - from modern M cars to older classics - being driven the way they were meant to be. The Amaroo Circuit may be short, but it demands skill, and watching others attack it is just as much fun as driving it yourself.
Session 2 was where the track really started to come to us. The sun poked through just enough to offer a hint of warmth, and the racing line was noticeably grippier. We went out determined to push harder and clean up the braking points, and it paid off. Lap times began to drop steadily, with the stopwatch showing a 1:02 before we unfortunately had to cut the run short - a slightly optimistic fuel estimate meant the tank ran low before we could finish the session. Still, the gains from the morning were clear, and the car felt alive.
By 11:00am, the atmosphere in the pits had changed again. Darker clouds rolled in, the temperature dropped, and the distinct scent of rain filled the air. With solid times already banked and the likelihood of a wet final session, we decided to call it a day. It turned out to be the right decision - within minutes of packing up, the heavens opened, and Amaroo became a waterlogged skating rink once more.
Despite the tricky conditions, it was another great outing with the BMW Drivers Club of NSW. The day gave us valuable seat time, meaningful data, and another chance to run the M140i hard in real-world track conditions. We’re already looking forward to Round 4 - and of course, the biggest BMW event in the country, BMW Superfest, which is just around the corner.
