This year we aim to race more, both at the dragstrip with Grimace and on the racetrack with our M140i. As long-time members of the BMW Drivers Club of NSW, we enjoy participating in their various small championships like Motorkhana, Track Days, and SuperSprint. In 2025, we plan to join in on the SuperSprint Series of four rounds. We’re excited to have fun, improve our skills, and fine-tune our race car.
Last Saturday, the 1st of February, saw Round 1 at the Druitt Circuit, Sydney Motorsport Park. Whether was forecasted to be wet and humid, with the potential of a few breaks of sun through the day. On arrival we were greeted with sun - which lasted through scrutineering and the drivers briefing. With three groups and about 6 sessions, there was going to be a lot of track time for all.
For our first outing, we adjusted tire pressures and warmed up the fluids. We’ve made changes since October 2024, like switching from Toyo R888r to Advan A052 semi-slicks. The new sidewall shape worried us about potential tire rub. With everything checked off the list, Ozzy was set to hit the track.
Hitting the track, it was obvious that these new Advan’s would be rubbing. Even on the warm-up lap, the rear left and occasionally right would slightly rub. Once some heat was put into them and Ozzy could put the hammer down, but it was an obvious hinderance to the drive. No damage was being done to the car, but the sounds were something that would make you lift sooner and accelerator softer. After the first session, we checked the tyre wear and re-set pressures. The rubbing was down to mm clearances and the little bit of rubbing through session one had seemed to clear the space needed for session 2.
It was now time for Session 2 and a wet track awaited Ozzy. Heading out he once again took the first out lap to reintroduce heat into the tyres and ensure all vehicle temps were correct. Once at temp, the hammer was put down once again. This time using the wet conditions to practise a wet line, wider at the apex and off the dry line on the straights… essentially. Session 2 proved to be a wild one, a lot of sliding and fun.
Session 3, 4, 5 & 6 were ultimately the same. Conditions continued to stay wet, with rain falling every few minutes to keep a consistent level of moisture on the track. Great for cutting laps and practise, so in all it was a very productive and rewarding day for our team. Next round is a joint round with the Porsche Club of NSW, once again at Sydney Motorsport Park but this time on the Gardner Circuit. See you there!
