The second round of the BMW Drivers Club of NSW SuperSprint has come and gone, once again held at Sydney Motorsport Park, this time on the Gardner Circuit. This is a special SuperSprint as it sees the BMW Drivers Club of NSW collaborating with the Porsche Club of NSW making for 120 competitor cars filling the parc ferme – 60 BMWs and 60 Porsches.
In preparation for this round our BMW M140i racer saw a few changes. The fuel system was touched on with the addition of an upgraded billet surge tank with two internal fuel pumps, along with upgraded in-tank fuel pumps, port injection and larger injectors. To make use of this addition fuel, a larger hybrid turbocharge from Turbo Systems was bolted on and a fresh custom TUNE+ ECU Tune on 98octane saw power increase to numbers just shy of 400RWKW. With the additional power sorted, we also increased clearance around rear tyres with the fitment of a pair of fender flares.
Come race day, the weather wasn’t looking to good, it was cold, windy and wet. But the forecast had good news for us all – as the rain would stop soon enough and leave conditions suitable enough for some fun. Session one was just a shake down, to give us confidence in all our changes and to ensure the M140i’s alignment was correct and sorted for the day. Everything went according to plan, but the track was unfortunately still quite damp and patchy.
Session two, with a dry line appearing - we decided to turn down the boost and focus on making a complete lap, pushing the car in some corners to the max and keeping things at 7/8 tenths in the others. The M140i showed real improvement and managed a few consistent laps this session.
Session 3, 4 & 5 we continued pushing the M140i on its lowest power setting, each lap upping the tempo behind the steering wheel. Lap after lap, Ozzy began to find some limitations, plus potential suspension and braking setting changes for the future. By the end of the day, we sat on the board as the 6th fastest BMW and 16th fastest overall. A very motivating outcome for its lowest power setting and a lot more push left on the table.
We look forward to fine-tuning our M140i for the Round 3 of the BMW Drivers Club of NSW SuperSprint at the biggest BMW day of the year, the BMW SuperFEST.
