But lately, we’ve noticed a worrying trend in the workshop: catastrophic rod bearing failure.
And this example was easily the worst we’ve seen so far.

What Causes N57 Rod Bearing Failure?
Like many modern high-torque engines, the BMW N57 places enormous stress on its bottom end - especially at low RPM where diesel torque delivery is highest.
Some of the most common contributors we’re seeing include:
- Extended oil service intervals
- Oil degradation and soot contamination
- High kilometre engines
- Heavy load / towing stress
- Poor lubrication conditions
- Bearing fatigue over time
Once lubrication begins breaking down, metal-to-metal contact occurs between the bearing and crankshaft journal. From there, temperatures rapidly increase, the bearing material deteriorates, and failure can happen very quickly.
Preventative Maintenance Is Critical
The N57 remains an incredibly capable diesel engine when maintained correctly.
Regular servicing with high-quality oil, sensible service intervals, and early inspection of unusual noises can dramatically reduce the risk of catastrophic engine failure.
As these engines continue ageing and climbing in kilometres, preventative maintenance becomes more important than ever.
