Stock, BMW M ‘CS’ or Stage 2?

If you own a BMW G80 M3, G81 M3 Touring, G82 or G83 M4 Competition, there is a good chance you have asked yourself the same question: how far should you take the S58?

Is BMW’s genuine M ‘CS’ Performance Upgrade enough, or is it worth taking the next step to a custom ECU tune?

On paper, the answer is not always obvious. The BMW M ‘CS’ Performance Upgrade delivers additional performance while retaining BMW’s factory calibration philosophy, while a custom ECU tune opens the door to substantially greater power and torque when combined with the correct supporting hardware.

Rather than relying on manufacturer claims or comparing specifications on paper, we decided to let the dyno do the talking.

Same BMW M4. Same Dyno. Same Conditions.

Using the same BMW G82 M4 Competition, we tested the factory calibration, BMW’s genuine M ‘CS’ Performance Upgrade and finally our custom TUNE+ Stage 2 S58 ECU Tune.

Every run was completed on our Mainline ProHub AWD Hub Dyno under the same controlled conditions, giving us a genuine back-to-back comparison of all three performance levels.

The results show not only how much additional power and torque each upgrade delivers, but how the entire S58 powerband changes as you move from stock, to the BMW M ‘CS’ calibration, and finally to a custom Stage 2 package.

1. Stock BMW G82 M4 Competition

369kW | 632Nm

Straight from the factory, the BMW S58 is already an incredibly capable performance engine.

Power builds progressively towards redline, while torque arrives early and remains broad through the mid-range. It gives the G82 M4 Competition the effortless performance, flexibility and refinement expected from a modern BMW M car.

For many owners, this is already more than enough. But the strength of the S58 platform also means there is substantial additional performance available when the calibration and supporting hardware are developed correctly.

BLUE LINE: STOCK RESULTS

2. BMW M ‘CS’ Performance Upgrade

382kW | 658Nm

BMW’s genuine M ‘CS’ Performance Upgrade is not intended to completely transform the character of the car. Instead, it builds on the factory calibration, lifting the power and torque curves while retaining the smooth drivability and integration expected from an OEM BMW package.

On our Mainline ProHub Dyno, the upgrade delivered an additional:

+13kW | +26Nm

It is not a night-and-day transformation, but the M4 becomes sharper and more responsive, with a measurable improvement across the powerband.

For owners wanting additional performance while retaining a completely factory-style calibration and driving experience, the BMW M ‘CS’ Performance Upgrade remains an excellent option.

BLUE LINE: BMW M ‘CS’ PERFORMANCE UPGRADE

3. Custom TUNE+ Stage 2 S58 ECU Tune

472kW | 838Nm

This is where the S58 begins to show just how much performance potential remains beyond the factory calibration.

For the complete BMW S58 Stage 2 package, the M4 was equipped with a DME unlock, WERKE performance hardware including downpipes and a 3.5-inch midpipe, Pipercross performance air filters, NGK spark plugs, a bootmod3 licence and a custom TCU calibration.

The vehicle was then custom ECU tuned in-house at EuroWerke using TUNE+ and tested on our Mainline ProHub AWD Hub Dyno.

Compared with the BMW M ‘CS’ Performance Upgrade, the custom Stage 2 package delivered:

+90kW | +180Nm

Compared with the original factory calibration, the total gain was:

+103kW | +206Nm

The peak figures are impressive, but the biggest difference is how the car delivers its performance. Acceleration becomes substantially stronger throughout the rev range, with considerably more torque through the mid-range and power continuing to build where the factory calibration begins to taper away.

BLUE LINE: CUSTOM TUNE+ STAGE 2 ECU TUNE

What Do the BMW S58 Dyno Graphs Show?

Looking at the three dyno graphs, it becomes easy to see how the S58 evolves with each performance step.

The factory calibration provides a broad, predictable powerband with excellent drivability. BMW’s M ‘CS’ Performance Upgrade builds on that foundation, lifting the curve while retaining the refined OEM character of the car.

The custom TUNE+ Stage 2 calibration is where the biggest transformation occurs. Rather than simply producing a larger peak number, the entire powerband is reshaped. Torque builds significantly harder through the mid-range and carries further through the rev range, while power continues climbing where the factory and M ‘CS’ calibrations begin to taper away.

That is why a dyno graph tells a much bigger story than the peak figures alone. The additional 103kW and 206Nm translate into stronger acceleration, greater urgency through every gear and a car that feels substantially faster wherever you use it.

It also demonstrates why proper supporting performance modifications, calibration and controlled dyno testing are important when extracting more performance from a modern BMW S58 platform.

Which BMW S58 Performance Upgrade Is Right for You?

There is no single answer. The right upgrade depends on what you want from your BMW, how you use the car and how far you ultimately want to take the platform.

For owners wanting a subtle increase in performance while retaining a completely OEM-style calibration and driving experience, the genuine BMW M ‘CS’ Performance Upgrade is an excellent choice.

For those wanting to unlock more of the BMW S58 platform’s performance potential, a custom ECU calibration with the correct supporting modifications delivers an entirely different level of performance. The gains are not simply reflected in peak dyno numbers; they are felt throughout the complete powerband.
